About Us
The Hayter Firm is a landscape architecture firm located in historic Pinehurst, North Carolina offering expertise in land planning and specialized site design. In all of our work, we strive to ensure that the character of the site—the existing natural environment—influences the concept of our design. This approach provides unique landscapes providing ‘one-of-a-kind’ designs so our work has no typical “Hayter Firm signature,” but instead allows the signature of the place and its renewed function to be the identifying “trademark”.
How We Think About Landscape Architecture
If there is a single term that best defines, whom we are and what we do as landscape architects at The Hayter Firm, it is the adjective, “simpatico.”
Derived from an Italian word that describes things or ideas that are compatible and agreeable when brought together, simpatico captures the essence of what we strive for everyday. Designs by The Hayter Firm’s landscape architects are conceived to blend form and function… to balance aesthetics and practicality… to achieve harmony between the built and the natural environments.
Our plans weave a site’s natural and cultural character with the purpose of the activities and facilities being developed. As a result—the grounds and the structures, the existing terrain and the built environment, the facility’s operational utility and the experience of its users—all come together in a way that is simply simpatico.

Our History
The heritage of The Hayter Firm is more than an account of how a successful business has grown over the past twenty-plus years. Our story is actually more about how a distinctive approach to landscape architecture created the opportunity to fulfill client needs.
While The Hayter Firm was formed in 1986, we trace our lineage as a landscape architecture practice to landscape design work begun by founder Robert Hayter in the mid 1970’s early 1980’s. At the time, Robert was a Professor of Landscape Design at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, NC, and was solidifying his design philosophies centered around client relationships and the concept of using landscape architecture to accentuate the character of the natural environment, rather than subjugating it into a synthetic place. This approach, along with Robert’s understanding of composition and elements of planning that fully incorporates the practical and functional considerations of a developed site, led to site design-consulting projects at the Pinehurst Resort, Caribbean Resorts, Urban Streetscapes and other landscapes.
This practice has since evolved to become The Hayter Firm, with a professional staff of four landscape architects who provide planning and design services to clients in a variety of locations.
